Members of the Screen Actors Guild this year chose to honour their acting peers in Inglorious Basterds, Mad Men and Glee, for outstanding cast performances.

Awards season is in full swing now, swift on the heels of the Golden Globe Awards last week, the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony took place on January 23rd 2010, in California.

The Screen Actors Guild is a trade union representing over 200,000 actors and was founded in 1933 to reduce the exploitation of actors, who were often tied into unfair contracts with major Hollywood studios. The unique angle to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards is that they are voted for by actors, members of the Screen Actors Guild, who nominate the best performances among their peers. As a result, the SAG awards only have categories for acting, not any other aspect of film making as is the case with other award ceremonies.

The SAG awards also have an 'Outstanding Performance by a Cast' category, which recognises multiple actors performances coming together to create a successful movie. This year director Quentin Tarantino's epic war film Inglorious Basterds (2009) took that honour. Among his cast were Brad Pitt, Christoph Waltz, Eli Roth, Diane Kruger and Melanie Laurent.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards 2010 winners were:

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role:

  • Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart (2009)

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role:

  • Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side (2009)

The winners of the SAG awards bare a close resemblance to the 2010 Golden Globe Award winners, together they give a strong indication as to who is likely to be nominated for an Academy Award. Sandra Bullock, Jeff Bridges, Mo'nique and Christoph Waltz have all picked up their second major acting awards of the season so far, so are strong contenders for Oscar nominations.
